Why Recycle Polyester Fiber Is Important

Polyester is made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the most common type of plastic in the world. In short, the majority of our clothes come from crude oil.

But polyester is the most widely used fiber in the apparel industry, accounting for around 52% of the total volume of fibers produced globally. The apparel industry accounts for around 32 million tons of the 57 million tons of polyester used each year.

Recycled polyester is obtained by melting down existing plastic and re-spinning it into new polyester fibre. To give an example, five water bottles yield enough fibre for one T-shirt. It means recycled polyester gives a second life to a material that’s not biodegradable and would otherwise end up in landfill or the ocean.

Recycled polyester has a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional. Each kg of mechanically recycled polyester represents a reduction in GHG emissions by more than 70% as compared to virgin polyester (Sustainable Apparel Coalition’s Higg Material Sustainability Index – raw materials “Higg MSI”).

But currently, only approximately 14% of this comes from recycled inputs – predominantly from post-consumer PET bottles.

It is very important for us to use more and more recycle polyester fiber instead of Virgin yarn.
